When you earn a graduate degree from Australia, you probably do not know the potency of what you are armed with until you start to live on it..... or change people's lives with it. If every alumni of any Australian University searched deep inside themselves, they would find they were equipped to solve problems around them or better still, turn problems into opportunities. I use my graduate degree to preserve the environment..... but not for free, I'm an environmental engineering consultant.
The African culture teaches us to say "thank you" but I'm in a fit of remorse not to have thanked AusAID before jumping on a plane with a graduate degree tucked under my arm! AusAID changed my life!
Armed with a Master's degree in environmental engineering from the University of Queensland Brisbane (MEngSc, 1998), I opened the first environmental engineering consulting practice in Uganda and over the years, I have seen this little dream grow from a small bubble to a regional firm with offices in Uganda and Rwanda. In the future, other offices are planned in Kenya and Tanzania .
Over the years, I have realised that putting numbers to environmental problems is in itself not an end, the numbers have to be turned into up-and-running solutions. Hence I founded an environmental systems implementation subsidiary to, among other things, install pollution control systems, sell or rent equipment, remediate contaminated sites and manage chemical and oil spills. This was also the first of its kind in Uganda .
All this I thankfully attribute to the AusAID scholarship that enabled my graduate studies in Australia !.
