Community and surrounds

Perth is the capital city of Western Australia, the largest state of Australia. The city has a population of 1.4 million, making it Australia’s fourth largest city. It is located on the southwest coast of the Australian continent with the Indian Ocean at its shores, situated along the banks of the Swan River and overlooked by Kings Park, a 400-hectare area of native gardens.

The city is in the same time zone as Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong and there is only a one-hour time difference from Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. Perth is one of the closest Australian capital cities to Africa.

Perth is a modern city, with a clean and well-planned central business district. The city centre provides for excellent shopping, as well as a vast range of restaurants, night life and entertainment venues. Perth is free from many of the crime and congestion problems of other international cities. As it is home to people from around the world, Perth offers all the benefits of a cosmopolitan city, such as speciality food stores, places of worship and social networks, which enable Perth’s diverse population to maintain the lifestyles of their cultures.

Climate

In the winter months (June to August) average temperatures range between 8 and 18 degrees Celsius and Perth receives the most amount of rainfall during these months (an average of 150mm per month).

In the summer months (December to February) temperatures can reach 40 degrees but usually average 17 to 32 degrees Celsius.

Cost of living and accommodation

Perth offers a high standard of living at a comparatively low cost. On average students should budget for AUD $260 per week for living expenses. This figure does not include tuition fees, textbooks, running a car or holiday travel.

On-campus accommodation costs between $100 and $140 a week. Off-campus, home-stay can cost approximately $160 to $175 a week including meals; a furnished bedroom can cost between $85 and $120; a rental property with three or four bedrooms can cost between $180 and $300 a week; and larger residences will cost between $280 and $350 depending on location and quality.

Campus descriptions

ECU has three metropolitan campuses in Joondalup, Mount Lawley and Churchlands and one Regional campus in Bunbury, a city 200kms south of Perth.

Joondalup Campus

ECU’s Joondalup campus is situated close to fast rail transport and Perth’s major freeway. The purpose-built campus boasts state-of-the-art facilities including the Science and Health Building, a multi-million dollar recreation centre and an outdoor cinema during the summer months. On-campus residential accommodation is available. The campus forms part of a major education precinct, which include West Coast TAFE and the Western Australia Police Academy.

Mount Lawley Campus

Only minutes away from Perth’s CBD and serviced by convenient public transport, ECU’s Mount Lawley Campus is an excellent choice for study. Extensive teaching resources, first-rate study facilities, a new gym and sports centre and on-campus residential accommodation is available. The Mount Lawley Campus forms part of a precinct with the Mount Lawley Senior High School and is home to one of Australia’s most successful arts training institutions, the Western Australian academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).

Churchlands Campus

ECU’s Churchlands campus is conveniently located a few minutes from the Perth CBD. Public transport and proximity to the freeway and major traffic arteries make this campus very accessible. Over the next few years the availability of courses offered from Churchlands will decrease as programs move to Joondalup and Mount Lawley. However, in the meantime, it is business as usual and student services and facilities will continue to meet demand.

South-West Campus (Bunbury)

Located a two-hour drive south of Perth and in Western Australia’s second largest city, ECU’s South-West Campus (Bunbury) is the largest university campus outside the metropolitan area. The campus is part of an educational precinct comprising of the South west regional College of TAFE and the Bunbury Health campus, which includes St John of God Hospital and South West Area Health Services. The campus has modern facilities, small class sizes, offers a comprehensive range of courses and has newly built on-campus residential accommodation.

All campuses offer a wide range of study and recreational facilities as well as a variety of services such as cafeterias and book-stores.

International student population

ECU’s International Mission is to be a leading provider of international education and training to individuals and groups, with an emphasis on accessibility, innovation, quality, flexibility and service.

Edith Cowan University’s strategic location in Perth - Australia’s western gateway to Asia, the Indian Ocean, Africa and Europe, has resulted in the development of a strong focus on international activities. These include: offshore delivery of a range of courses with partner institutions; student and staff exchange programs with universities around the world; joint research activities; international consultancies; and individual academic links. Some 2,300 international students from over 80 countries, representing around 10% of the total student population, choose to study at ECU and the university is committed to ongoing internationalisation of curricula and learning experiences for all students.

ECU is also an active member of various international university networks, such as the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the International Association of Universities, the Commonwealth Universities Study Abroad Consortium, and other multilateral student exchange programs such as UMAP (University Mobility in the Asia and Pacific). ECU also plays a leading role in the AEN (Australian European Network), and UTRECHT Exchange program.

International student support

The International Student Support (ISS) Team at ECU facilitates ongoing support to international, exchange and study abroad students. International Student Advisors provide front-line support/advisory services and advocacy for international students.
They are responsible for the organisation of programs such as Orientation and Welcome Week; Airport reception; Going Home and Celebration day; support for International student organisations; and social programs. They also provide individual services to international students and advocacy within the University and to external agencies as required. For example: appeals against assessment; landlord complaints etc.

ECU is committed to meeting the unique needs of all international students, and our members of staff are available to assist students by offering these services.

Family and community services

The university health service is available to all students, their spouses and children, and students can find medical centres throughout Perth and its suburbs. The university area and all suburbs of Perth are well served by private medical practitioners. Emergency hospital services are available 24 hours a day. Hospitals exist for the particular needs of women and children such as the King Edward Memorial Hospital and the Princess Margaret Hospital respectively.

The Western Australian State Government provides a certain number of places in government schools for dependent school age children and there are also many childcare centres in and around Perth.

There are many shops, supermarkets, major department stores, discount department stores, pharmacies and chemists close to campus.

As Perth is a State capital city, it has employment opportunities in a wide range of industries. In addition to the businesses within the city, Perth is also an administrative centre for the oil, gas and mining industries across the State.

Childcare facilities

Well-equipped childcare centres with professional staff are available on each of ECU’s metropolitan campuses.

External childcare providers can also be used by the dependents of ADS students. Under arrangement with the Australian Government, ADS students are eligible to apply for a childcare rebate to refund childcare costs to them.

Facilities for special needs

ECU welcomes students with disabilities and medical conditions and provides a range of services to support access to academic programs.

The university is committed to providing an environment of equal opportunity, free from unfair discrimination, for students with disabilities in the pursuit of their academic goals. The university aims to achieve equitable access for students and staff with disabilities to all academic, occupational, recreational and social activities.

Edith Cowan University employs a disability advisor whose primary responsibility is to provide support to students and staff with disabilities. Students are encouraged to contact the Disability Adviser for further information prior to enrolment.

Foods for different cultures

All types of cuisine are available in Perth including Indian, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Lebanese and Italian. There are many shops that sell food and ingredients from Africa and Asia.

A number of Asian grocery stores are located in suburbs close to the city centre (Northbridge). Halal food is available from several of the many restaurants, stores and food outlets nearby. There are also specialty shops which cater to the needs of Perth’s many cultures. Local delicatessens which stock essential food and household items are open for longer hours (usually from 8.00am to 9.00pm or later each day). There are also several markets open on the weekends and public holidays and these are located in the suburbs of Canning vale, Subiaco, Fremantle, Gosnells, Wanneroo and Malaga.

Religious facilities

ECU supports spirituality, providing care and creating community. The University values and respects your faith tradition as a member of ECU's dynamic, multicultural and multi-faith community.

The University Chaplain is responsible for the management and coordination of the Multi-faith Chaplaincy Service, including the Visiting Chaplain program. The University Chaplain is an ECU staff member providing an ecumenical and interfaith service to the university community by helping to support the integration of faith and spirituality within the context of study and work.

Visiting Chaplains

Our Visiting Chaplains are experienced religious professionals who have been granted standing as an ECU Visiting Chaplain to represent their own faith tradition, but also to serve the wider university community. As members of the Multi-faith Chaplaincy Service team, they offer their services to help strengthen the sense of community and enrich the quality of life for all.
Our chaplains come from a variety of spiritual traditions such as the Buddhism, Islam, Anglican, Jewish, Baha’i and Baptist faiths.

These chaplains offer:
• A safe place and listening ear
• Opportunities to nurture, express and explore your spirituality
• Links to religious groups and faith communities
• Care and support in times of uncertainty, crisis and loss
• A multi-faith focus for spiritual life on campus
• A free and confidential service

Public transport

ECU International can arrange for you to be met at the airport upon arrival in Perth. This is a free service offered to all new students. A representative of ECU will meet you at the airport. You will be transported to your chosen accommodation: Temporary that we have booked on your behalf; ECU Student Housing; or Other accommodation that you have arranged yourself.

Getting around

Perth has a modern public transport system, supported by an integrated network of buses, ferries and rapid transit train services. Fares range from 80 cents (to cross one zone) to $1.60 (to cross three zones). Most students live within one zone radius of the university campuses. Concession fares are available to students with a student card.

All of ECU’s campuses are conveniently located for public transport. In addition, a free bus service ferries students and staff between the Joondalup bus station and the University campus every week day. Another free shuttle service also transports students between the Churchlands campus and Glendalough train station between 7pm and 10pm every week night.
