Community and surrounds

Griffith University is the ideal location to combine study with a great lifestyle. With five campuses in the dynamic Brisbane-Gold Coast region you have ready access to capital city social, cultural and recreational facilities and the attractions of the State’s top surfside tourist destination.

Brisbane
Brisbane is the capital of Queensland and is home to approximately 1.8 million people. Set on the banks of the Brisbane River, it is a beautiful and cosmopolitan city, which offers all the social, cultural and recreational facilities that you would expect of a state capital.

Gold Coast
The Gold Coast is Australia’s holiday capital, with amazing theme parks, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks and golden, sandy beaches. It is about 45 minutes drive south of Brisbane, with a population of approximately 425,000 and offers a broad variety of international cuisines and entertainment.

Logan
Logan is Queensland’s third largest city and one of the fastest growing regions in Australia. Situated 20 minutes drive south of Brisbane; it is home to more than 170,000 people from 161 different cultures. It boasts an entertainment centre, art galleries and many varied activities.

Climate

Queensland’s subtropical climate is perfect, with typically mild winters and warm summers. Temperatures average between 9°C and 20°C in winter and 21°C and 32°C in summer.

Cost of living and accommodation

You will require approximately AUD$15,000 - $18,000 (dependant upon your program) to meet your expenses each year for accommodation, textbooks and other study materials, as well as your personal expenses. The personal expenses may include transport, entertainment and recreation costs. However, this amount will not cover additional major expenses such as the purchase of a car, television, stereo or computer.

Some important things to know:
• Motor vehicles are expensive in Australia. A new small car costs at least AUD$15,000 and a reliable second-hand vehicle costs about AUD$6,000.
• Car insurance and registration costs are about AUD$1,200 per year.
• A television or stereo costs between AUD$400 and AUD$2,000.
• A new computer can cost up to AUD$3,000.

Books and other study costs
Depending on your program of study, the cost of textbooks varies between AUD$650 and AUD$1100 per semester. You should buy essential textbooks and use the University library for supplementary reading. Textbooks, reference books, publications of general interest and stationary are available at bookshops on the campuses.

We recommend you bring at least AUD$3,000 with you to meet your establishment costs (for example, bonds on rental property, telephone connection charges and textbooks).

Your study program may involve additional incidental expenses such as materials or field trips, which you will be informed about at the beginning of your classes. For example, if you undertake Queensland College of Art courses, you can expect to spend between AUD$1500 and AUD$2500 per year on materials and art supplies.

Depending on which campus you choose to study at you will have a number of accommodation options that are available to you:

On-Campus: is student accommodation that is provided in residential colleges on site at the Nathan, Mt Gravatt and Gold Coast campuses.

Off-Campus: includes a variety of rental accommodation options such as - houses, apartments/flats or units, hostels and share accommodation.

Homestay: is accommodation offered to students by families who live within commuting distance of Griffith University and provides a supportive family environment to students new to Australia. However, it should not be considered a substitute for temporary accommodation as the minimum duration for homestay is 4 weeks, and payment is required in advance.
