Community and surrounds

With a population of more than 90,000 people, Toowoomba is the second largest inland city in Australia and provides a crucial link between city and country life. Atop the Great Dividing Range, Toowoomba is located 90 minutes west of Brisbane and two hours from the Gold Coast. The city is not only regarded as a regional centre but an education centre, with USQ being an integral part of the Toowomba community. The university contributes extensively to the city’s economy, culture, and lifestyle. Because it is a regional university, USQ Toowoomba offers its students an excellent education, a relaxed and friendly campus and living environment. Having students from over 60 countries at USQ gives the campus a multi-cultural flavour.

USQ’s Wide Bay campus is situated 289km north of Brisbane, on the eastern coast, in the town of Hervey Bay. Hervey Bay is a rapidly growing centre located at the entrance to the Fraser Coast, and is world-renowned for its World Heritage and environmental attractions such as Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world, and whale watching.

Climate

Situated on top of the Great Dividing Range, Toowomba enjoys a temperate climate. The average temperature range during summer is 17 to 28 degrees Celsius, and 6 to 16 degrees Celsius in winter. Winter nights can drop to minus 4 degrees Celsius so it is wise to bring or purchase warm clothes and bedding.

Cost of living and accommodation

Toowoomba offers a wide range of accommodation options to students. USQ has three residential colleges so students are close to all university facilities. Residential fees include meals, electricity, weekly provision of laundered linen, weekly room cleaning, access to residential tutors and common room facilities. Weekly fees start at $210.

There are many accommodation options available to students wishing to live off campus in close proximity to the university, such as: rental houses, apartments, and share accommodation. Prices vary according to the type of housing chosen but can range from $70 to $200 per week. Toowoomba is serviced by reliable public transport.

“Homestay” accommodation is available in both the Toowoomba and the Wide Bay regions for students wishing to live in a home environment or with a family. Prices start at $130 per week.
